HVO PROJECT: ONE STEP CLOSER TO CERTAINTY FOR 1,500 WORKERS

01 October 2026

Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) welcomes the decision by the New South Wales (NSW) Independent Planning Commission (IPC) to approve the HVO Continuation Project.

HVO General Manager Dave Foster said the State approval marked a pivotal milestone for 1,500 mine workers, their families and the regional economy.

“Our deepest and most sincere thanks must go to our dedicated workforce, our local suppliers, and the broader Hunter community. Their unwavering support throughout this process has been a driving force behind this successful result,” said Mr Foster.

This State approval comes after an exhaustive six-year regulatory approval process.

HVO engaged transparently and constructively with regulators to make big changes to the project’s design to ensure alignment with both NSW and Federal government legislative guidelines, environmental standards and climate change policies.

The NSW government has recognised the important economic contribution that HVO makes to the state which over the last four years has been more than A$6.9 billion. We look forward to continuing that economic contribution to the Hunter region and the State.

While this State approval brings HVO one step closer to long-term certainty, the process is not yet complete. HVO still needs to secure a critical Federal government environmental approval by the end of December 2026 to continue operations.

We will continue to engage with the National Environmental Protection Agency (National EPA) to secure the final approval needed to protect 1,500 regional jobs and deliver economic certainty and stability for the Hunter region.
